Nature goes indoors

A glimpse at the sunset from the comfort of your couch? Green hills, blue skies and rays of sun envisioned into design furniture for the home, with her playful, colorful and dynamic brand Sunrae, Lea Bsaibes invites us to have fun with our space.

Lea opens the camera on our zoom call, and we instantly spot the serene Moonrise Sahara tables set, in soothing hues of Night Blue, Powder Sand and Desert brick, that bring flair to her already luminous space. Behind a green plant, on the wall, hangs the Wuzzle, that wooden puzzle Lea has conceived as part of Sunrae’s first collection. The designer is a big fan of puzzles, and the sweet moment they create; alone, with friends or family, stressed or happy, they have a way of getting our mind off things. When you piece together the wooden bits of Sunrae’s wuzzle, a colorful dreamy landscape comes to life, set on a tray, that can be hung on the wall like a playful art piece. In fact, at Sunrae any piece is conceived to be interactive, bringing life to the space they adorn, evolving with your taste and feeling. The table sets of the first collection; Landscape Series, can be moved around, placing the Sunrise yellow table in a corner for coffee time, or seemingly rising from two green hills, nature inspired tables, in hues of Light and Dark Leaf. The Sunset Orange round table destined to set among the Aqua and Night Blue Sunset Sea tables, can pop between the waves or set among them. Sunrae is Lea’s fun outlet, where she lets her creativity flow freely, imagining colorful pieces intended to spark joy and bring playfulness to a space. It is one of those dreams that we keep in the back of our minds, jot down ideas for here and there, take a step forward then ponder a while. The entrepreneur had been thinking about it for years, busy with other projects, sometimes demotivated by the hardships the region has been going through, postponing, until one day she though ‘anytime is a good time,’ and decided to launch and stop waiting for ‘the right time,’ and Sunrae is now a dream come true.

Each piece can be ordered in each of the eight colors of Sunrae, a palette inspired by the 70s and 80s in muted rainbow tones. Every element is beautifully self-sufficient, but stacked, or placed together they give rise to a wondrous landscape, from desert to mountains or sea, bringing sleek ingenious design to any space. Each table comes flat packed, with three legs, that you install at home on your own, at your leisure, with the option to mix and match colors and heights between the different tables. They can also be customized on order, ‘a client just asked me for a table with higher legs to use it as a desk,’ Lea tells us.  Benefitting from fourty years of savoir faire, the pieces are made in the family carpentry, founded by Lea’s father in the eighties. Lea who is an interior designer, has been working with the family business for years, and taking on large scale projects. At the moment she is working on the design of an elderly home, and an entertainment center for kids and teens. She’d always had the Sunrae project in the back of her mind, and had been testing prototypes, shapes, colors, or the best way to fit the legs. She was keen to create long-lasting design pieces, that are anti scratch, water and heat resistant, and with an impeccable finish, while remaining approachable. While the drawings had been sketched more than two years ago, she trialed and tested until launch this year, on March 25, her birthday. The name is for the colors of the rainbow or a ray of sun, and, she laughs, ‘Rae is also the name of my niece that I am very fond of.’ Since then, she has been focused on the launch, finalizing her ultra convenient flat packaging, the branding of Sunrae, and her crisp pieces are now landing in boutiques in Beirut and Batroun. Lea is also working on upcoming drops, table lamps and mirrors, that will stay true to the brand’s playful identity, with its signature smooth curves and soothing color palette.
